Entrepreneurship and Deontic Engineering
How entrepreneurs construct new possibilities through agreements, rights, duties, permissions, authority, access, control, and participation.
Entrepreneurs do not merely discover resources already waiting in the world. They often make things into resources by constructing the social arrangements that allow them to be accessed, controlled, combined, recognized, and used.
A license can create access. A partnership can create capabilities that neither party possesses alone. A role can create authority. A contract can transform a physical object, idea, relationship, or stream of information into something that can support coordinated economic action.
I call the deliberate construction of these arrangements deontic engineering. The resulting strategically generative agreement structures can expand an actor’s range of action without requiring ownership of every underlying asset. This program connects philosophical foundations to entrepreneurial education, venture practice, resource theory, and organizational design.
